Excavator uses less fuel, company says

Volvo Construction Equipment designed the EC380E crawler excavator to lower operating costs through reduced fuel consumption and simple maintenance requirements. A Tier 4 Final Volvo D13 engine powers the EC380E, delivering a 9 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, according to the company. Volvo says the excavator’s hydraulics are matched to the engine and are controlled by a system that provides on-demand flow and reduces power losses within the circuit. The Volvo Eco mode contributes up to 9 percent of the machine’s total improved efficiency without any loss of performance in most operating conditions, the company adds. Another system offers operators the choice of four work modes – idle, fine, general or heavy – for optimum efficiency and machine performance. When the controls have been inactive for a preset amount of time, the excavator can be programmed to automatically reduce engine speed or shut down to further reduce fuel consumption and noise. Operators can keep track of both current and average fuel consumption via a gauge in the cab.
