NDA pushes for demolition industry to be ‘essential’ amid coronavirus
The National Demolition Association (NDA) submitted letters to Congress, the Department of Homeland Security and President Trump, urging for the demolition industry to be deemed “essential” during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“The National Demolition Association supports several public health measures that will help limit the spread of the virus,” the association writes in its letter to President Trump. “However, it is important that these orders do not inadvertently harm the demolition, recycling and remediation industries and that they be designated as “essential.”
In NDA’s letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), the association recommends Congress consider the following measures: a significant payroll tax relief/holiday; defining demolition work, including remediation work, as “essential” business; ramped-up lending programs with delayed payback and low/no interest; refundable tax credits to small businesses, including pass-throughs; and flexibility in paid leave for small employers.
These submitted letters come on the heels of one in four contractors experiencing halted or delayed projects, according to a March 20 survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America.
NDA represents more than 500 firms and their 400,000-plus employees.
