PPE0314_composting-page1topREleven manufacturers brought a combined 16 portable plants to the U.S. Composting Council’s (USCC) equipment demonstrations Jan. 29 at Waste Management’s Redwood Landfill in Novato, Calif. The demos capped off USCC’s annual conference and trade show in Oakland, Calif. Here’s a look at seven portable plants in action at the event.

Grinders and shredders

Bandit Beast 1680
Applications: Ideal for small land clearing, municipalities, recycling yards and tree service companies.
Horsepower: 200 to 325 hp
Key features: Has a 16-in. diameter capacity; an 18-in. x 52-in. mill opening; and a 26-tooth cuttermill setup that allows the machine to process a range of materials. A 10-ft.-long x 52-in.-wide rubber belt in-feed conveyor serves material to the cuttermill. A 15-ft.-long x 48-in.-wide, single-speed stationary discharge conveyor provides a stacking height of 9 ft.
Did you know: The 1680 can be configured specifically for shingle grinding or with a self-contained coloring system.

PPE0314_composting-diamondzRDiamond Z DZH 4000
Applications: Handles construction waste, brush and yard waste, and stumps and logs.
Horsepower: 700 to 765 hp
Key features: This 61-ft.-long x 10-ft.-wide x 18-ft.-tall horizontal grinder sports a Caterpillar C18 ACERT engine with either Tier 2 or Tier 3 emission capabilities. The feed opening is about 54 in. x 48 in., and an output height of 13 1/2 ft. can be achieved, according to the company.
Did you know: The DZH 4000 was launched as a smaller horizontal grinder compared with Diamond Z’s more traditional machines to offer users better portability.

Doppstadt DW 3060K
Applications: Shreds a variety of wood waste, including logs and stumps, landfill debris and land-clearing materials.
Horsepower: 430 hp
Key features: This tracked machine sports a Mercedes Benz OM460 diesel engine. The conveyor measures 16 ft. long x 4 ft. wide, and a heavy-duty comb breaks away and repositions during operation, preventing damage from non-crushables.
Did you know: Optional 48-in. hopper heightening plates are available with the DW 3060K.

PPE0314_composting-komptechRKomptech Crambo 5000
Applications: Shreds wood waste, green waste, food waste, shingles and railroad ties.
Horsepower: 440 hp
Key features: A Caterpillar C13 engine powers the machine, which has a loading height of about 9 1/2 ft. and a discharge height up to 13 1/2 ft. on tracks.
Did you know: The shredding degree can be adjusted flexibly, either by changing the screen basket or by changing the screen basket cartridge.

PPE0314_composting-morbarkRMorbark 4600XL grinder
Applications: Processes brush, yard waste, clearing debris, storm debris, C&D waste, other mixed woody feedstocks and asphalt shingles.
Horsepower: 800 to 1,050 hp
Key features: With a large hammermill and a 36-in. tip swing, Morbark’s 4600XL’s features include a 60-in. x 46-in. in-feed opening for processing bulky material, a pegged feed wheel to prevent wrapping, and a rugged WHD-120 in-feed chain to handle tough material.
Did you know: The 4600XL, the third-largest of Morbark’s Wood Hog horizontal grinders at nearly 89,000 lbs., has a discharge system that consists of a hydraulically driven, horizontal 48-in.- wide x 22-ft.-long aggregate belly belt conveyor. The conveyor discharges onto a 36-in.-wide stacking conveyor with hydraulic fold for transport.

PPE0314_composting-petersonRPeterson 5710D
Applications: Handles wood waste, including stumps, as well as other materials
Horsepower: 1,050 hp
Key features: Sports a feed opening of 60 in. x 40 in., a high lift feed roll and a new control panel that provides self-diagnostics for faulty sensors and open circuits. An impact cushion system allows movement of the compression roll, cushioning impacts due to contaminants in the feed material.
Did you know? This new grinder was designed for operations that require frequent moves between jobs without a special permit. Also, this is a redesigned model that features a Caterpillar Tier 4 Interim engine.

Vermeer HG6000E grinder
Applications: Processes wood waste, green waste
Horsepower: 600 hp
Key features: The HG6000E provides multiple configurations and conveyor options to help meet jobsite constraints. The skid-mounted unit offers a 14-ft. or 20-ft. in-feed conveyor length and three options for the discharge conveyor, including a belly, fixed or folding conveyor. A trailer-mounted option is also available when additional mobility is needed.
Did you know? Two electric motors power the HG6000E drum to deliver the 600 hp, while a separate 60-hp electric motor powers the pump for the hydraulic circuits. A 2-hp electric motor is used to cool the hydraulic system.
