Titan Enterprises, a Virginia-based construction company with more than 130 employees across its sister companies, recently acquired a recycling site in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to gain greater control over its materials.
While Titan’s main area of business is commercial and residential concrete construction, the new facility allows Titan to make its own construction materials. Concrete is recycled on site and later reused for projects.
New location, new machinery
Still, acquiring the new site – dubbed SC Recycling Center – was just the first step in Titan’s process. The second step was finding the equipment and technology to optimize production.
Michael Morais, a supervisor for Titan, assisted in this venture. After a number of crusher tests in the 25-ton range, Titan selected Rockster’s R900 impact crusher, which features a hydrostatic concept.
“The design of the machines and the fully hydraulic installations with the hydrostatic drive are simply more reliable than the electric in this application,” says Jack Pereira, CEO of Titan.
Titan needed the ability to produce three different fractions. Rockster provided the equipment necessary to meet Titan’s goal by providing an RSS410 scalping screen to pair with the R900. The RSS410 was selected due to its ease of handling, compact measurements and light weight of only 15 tons.
“I took a look into the crusher engine compartment and was convinced that this is a sophisticated and well-designed machine,” Pereira says. “Everything is clearly arranged [and] what’s very important for service works.”
According to Pereira, the combination of the R900 and the RSS410 produces 150 tons per hour of screened final product with a cubical shape, a feeding size of 20 in. and finishing sizes up to 3 in.
“The machines handle the material perfectly and flawlessly,” Morais says. “My experience so far is amazing. Rockster offers great products and excellent support. The materials being produced [are] exactly what I was looking for, and I receive nothing but compliments on the materials I am producing.”
Future growth
As of now, all concrete and asphalt recycled at the SC Recycling Center is for Titan’s use only. If demand for recycled materials increases, Morais and Pereira can see the business expanding into contract crushing.
“Since the machines are very easy to transport and easy to handle, which are important factors in this business, we could also crush and screen right at the customer’s jobsite,” Pereira says.
To maintain flexibility, Titan utilizes Rockster’s Duplex option – a system that allows the installation of a jaw crusher unit instead of the impactor on the same machine frame.
“With a jaw, we could also crush very hard virgin stone with good performance and low wear that would just bring more business opportunities when it comes to different projects,” Pereira says.
