Granite Construction was awarded two airport projects – one in Inyokern, California, and one in Anchorage, Alaska – totaling $15 million.
Of that $15 million, $9 million is for Inyokern Airport’s Reconstruct Runway 2-20 project – awarded by the Indian Wells Valley Airport District – where Granite will be responsible for the removal and reconstruction of runway 2-20.
According to Granite, the existing runway will be recycled onsite and used for 12,700 cu. yd. of recycled base under the new runway. Granite’s new Solari and Big Rock facilities will supply aggregate base and hot mix asphalt for the project. The contract will be included in Granite’s fourth quarter backlog, the company says, with construction scheduled to begin in November and an expected completion date of June 2021.
“Granite looks forward to partnering with Indian Wells Valley Airport District to revitalize Inyokern’s runway,” says Larry Camilleri, regional vice president at Granite. “This project is a significant win for our Solari and Big Rock facilities, which will supply 30,000 tons of hot mix asphalt and 43,000 tons of aggregate base for this important project.”
Up in Alaska
In Anchorage, Alaska, Granite will begin construction for the municipality of Anchorage’s Merrill Field Airport Improvements Rehabilitate Primary Access Road project in May 2021, with an expected completion date of October 2021.
According to Granite, the company will be responsible for the rehabilitation of the 8,800-ft. Merrill Drive Field, including the demolition and removal of existing pavement; dynamic compaction of soil and landfill waste; unclassified excavation and more. Granite’s Lang Street Asphalt Plant in Anchorage will supply construction materials for the project, including 3,300 tons of hot mix asphalt. The contract was included in Granite’s third-quarter backlog, the company says.
With these two projects included, Granite’s current airport projects total 45 across the U.S., the company says.
