NAPA, ARRA to study recycling technologies
The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA) partnered to measure the use of recycling technologies for asphalt pavements that were in place during the 2019 construction season.
NAPA and ARRA, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, are surveying contractors across the United States that engage hot in-place recycling, cold in-place recycling, cold central plant recycling and full-depth reclamation of asphalt pavements.
“For more than a decade, NAPA has tracked the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement and other recycled materials in new asphalt pavement mixtures,” says Brett Williams, director of engineering and technical support at NAPA, who will be administering the survey. “With this survey, we hope to better quantify how 100 percent recyclable asphalt pavements are being used and reused nationwide.”
According to NAPA, companies of all sizes using these technologies can participate in the survey, and all information provided will be kept confidential. Survey results will primarily be reported at the national level, and regional results may be reported, pending sufficient participation from each region.
“These in-place recycling technologies are an important part of the toolbox, particularly for local agencies,” says Rick Church, executive director at ARRA. “By quantifying the use of these technologies, we can help state and local officials better understand the widespread acceptance of in-place recycling, as well as quantify its sustainable benefits.”
