Sand, gravel and topsoil are processed at Pierce Builders’ open-cast mine in Broad Brook, Connecticut.
With two Kleemann mobile screening plants, Pierce Builders prepares material to produce asphalt, concrete and bedding sand. Pierce Builders has been operating the Broad Brook sand and gravel pit for more than two years.
Owner Alescia Pierce, who also serves as mining manager, is supported by other women on the machines and within the organization. Pierce doesn’t just manage the pit; she is ready to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty.
Portable performance
At the heart of the operation are two Kleemann mobile screening plants: the Mobiscreen MSC 953 EVO classifying screening plant for producing sand, and the MSS 802i EVO coarse screening plant for screening topsoil and gravel. The plants are supplemented by Mobibelt mobile stockpiling conveyors.
Both plants were initially rented but eventually became permanent stays at Pierce Builders. The company was so pleased with the performance of the MSC 953 EVO and the MSS 802i EVO that it purchased additional Kleemann plants shortly thereafter.
“We started with just one, and soon we had five, because of their amazing performance,” Pierce says.
The performance and handling of the Mobiscreen MSS 802i EVO have impressed Pierce.
“I love the coarse screening machine,” she says. “I have years of experience in screening topsoil, and then this screen from Kleemann comes along and the material just flows through.”
Pierce adds that the MSS 802i EVO is “the very best machine available” for removal of root residue and unclogging hoppers.
The Mobiscreen MSC 953 EVO produces sand for asphalt, concrete and bedding material. Dry feed material can be processed at a rate of up to 3,000 tons per day, while the output for wet material is around 1,500 tons per day. Average daily fuel consumption is around 40 gallons. Operation is carried out via a mobile control unit.
The plants are fed by John Deere wheel loaders and excavators, with three mobile Kleemann stacker conveyors assisting with material discharge.
“The stockpile conveyors save valuable time,” Pierce says. “The material piles don’t fill up as quickly, so other tasks can be carried out on site with the wheel loader.”
Kleemann says the John Deere Operations Center ensures smooth processes. The central platform for managing construction sites serves as an interface between operators, machines and the office where site managers and dispatchers are located.
