Sixteen portable plants, including eight screens were in action during the U.S. Composting Council’s (USCC) equipment demonstrations earlier this year at Waste Management’s Redwood Landfill in Novato, Calif. Here’s a look at seven of the screens in the USCC lineup that day.

Doppstadt SM 720
Power output: 100 hp
Key features: A DaimlerChrysler OM 904 LA diesel engine swings out at 90 degrees to simplify access to this machine. The 23-ft., 7-in. drum is replaceable for those in need of a quick change to a different product size, and a skeletal drum is an available option for use with a screen cloth. Other features are hydraulically foldable discharge conveyors, a self-propelled drive and a drum that’s continuously cleaned by hydraulically tensioned brushes and a scraper.
Did you know: A semitrailer chassis speeds up transport, the company says, and the machine can be moved on site by a wheel loader. The machine can also be operated remotely from a wheel loader.

Komptech Cribus 5000 E
Power output: 59.5 to 64 hp (diesel) or 36 kW (electric)
Key features: The Cribus 5000 E is designed for high throughput, the company says, featuring a 540-sq.-ft. screening area along a 25-ft., 3-in.-long drum with a hopper that can hold more than 8.5 cu. yd. It’s a hybrid machine whose power is sourced from an electric grid or generated by an integrated diesel generator. Komptech says the Cribus 5000 E consumes up to 75 percent less energy when the electric drive is in use and up to 25 percent less energy when the generator is utilized.
Did you know: An automatic startup and idling feature is designed to simplify starting, and load-dependent hopper control prevents the screen drum from being overloaded.

Komptech Multistar L3
Power output: 64 hp
Key features: The Multistar L3, which Komptech says is capable of screening up to 235 cu. yd. per hour, produces three fractions in one pass. The company says two wheel loaders have their hands full when the machine is operating at full capacity. Komptech’s Cleanstar system, in which each star has a cleaning finger to clear the screen gap to the surrounding stars on each rotation, cleans the screen units. The Multistar L3’s hopper volume is 9.2 cu. yd., and its transport length is 36 ft., 11 in.
Did you know: Machine options are a wind sifter for the coarse and medium fraction, magnetic rollers and rolling fraction separators. Production can also be switched to produce just two fractions if necessary.

McCloskey 516
Power output: 130 hp
Key features: The 516 trommel screens topsoil, compost, sand and gravel, and wood chips in a 16-ft. drum. It measures about 52 ft. long x 9.5 ft. wide x 13.5 ft. tall and can achieve stockpile heights up to 14.5 ft. A radial conveyor that swings 180 degrees helps to maximize stockpiles around the screen. In addition, this machine has a hopper capacity of 6.4 cu. yd. with extensions.
Did you know: McCloskey’s 621 trommel offers many of the same benefits as the 516, including the radial fines conveyor and a large engine bay designed to simplify maintenance.

Neuenhauser SuperScreener 3F
Power output: 173 hp
Key features: This Tier 4 Interim-compliant screen produced three products on a tracked chassis. The 3F’s midsized screen produces products ranging in size from 1 in. to 8 in., and its fines screen is capable of screening material down to 0.375 in. Also, the screen’s hopper can handle 9.8 cu. yd. of material.
Did you know: Neuenhauser’s SuperScreeners are available on wheeled and tracked chassis and in two- or three-way split configurations. This series is best at processing mulch, compost and topsoil, the company says.

Terra Select T3
Power output: 30.8 hp
Key features: This Terra Select trommel is equipped with a Perkins diesel engine and a hopper that helps to produce up to 78 cu. yd. per hour. The trommel is 9.8 ft. long x 5.2 ft. wide.
Did you know: A Terra Select S6 trommel was also demonstrated at USCC’s demo day.
Vermeer TR521
Power output: 99 hp
Key features: The TR 521, designed for topsoil with a high moisture content, is outfitted with a 5-ft. hopper that retains 5 cu. yd. of material. Powered by a Tier 3-compliant John Deere 5030HF engine, Vermeer says this screen moves material smoothly without bridging thanks to a tall, wide throat opening. The company recommends keeping screen weights low when processing wet materials by clamping on a smaller-diameter tension screen wire and increasing the screening area.
Did you know: At transport, this machine measures 46.5 ft. x 105 ft. x 13.1 ft., and it has the capacity to produce 150 cu. yd. per hour with 0.5-in. screens installed and material with moisture less than 40 percent.
